Process for Gaining Law Equivalency in Canada

To gain law equivalency in Canada, foreign-trained lawyers must apply to the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) to have their credentials evaluated and receive a Certificate of Qualification (CQ).

This process involves a review of their international legal education and may require completing specific Canadian law courses or challenge exams to meet the standards of an approved Canadian Juris Doctor (J.D. or LL.B.) degree.

Once a CQ is obtained, candidates can pursue provincial bar admission and licensing requirements, including exams and an articling or Law Practice Program (LPP).

Steps to Obtain Law Equivalency

1. Meet the NCA Requirements

The NCA will outline the specific Canadian law courses, challenge exams, or other academic requirements you must complete to satisfy Canadian legal education standards.

2. Contact the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA)

The NCA assesses international law degrees and provides a recommendation of the additional legal education needed to qualify as a Canadian lawyer.

3. Complete the Required Education/Exams

This may involve taking courses at a Canadian law school (often through a Professional LL.M. program) or passing the NCA’s challenge examinations.

4. Receive the Certificate of Qualification (CQ)

5. Apply for Bar Admission

The CQ allows you to proceed to the lawyer licensing process in your chosen Canadian province or territory.

6. Complete the Licensing Process

This typically involves passing provincial bar exams and completing experiential training, such as the articling process or a Law Practice Program (LPP).
